Warning Signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Injuries, genetics, and the repetitive use of our hands can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition causes pain and irritation and hinders a person’s ability to function at work and home.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is when the median nerve, which travels down the arm into the hand, becomes compressed. As the nerve passes through a narrow path in the wrist, the nerve can become squeezed. This causes the fingers and thumb to feel tingly and numb. Continued pressure on the median nerve can lead to nerve damage or surgery.

It’s important to identify the warning signs of carpal tunnel syndrome so you can know when to consult a doctor. The warning signs include:

  • A feeling that your fingers are full or swollen
  • Difficulty picking up and holding objects
  • Muscles at the base of the thumb becoming smaller than they used to be
  • Pain from your hand that moves up your arm
  • Pain, tingling, and numbness in the fingers (all but the pinky)
  • Weakness in your hand
